Visitors to the Club Marine Perth International Boat Show can try their skills at the sport of sailing, thanks to a partnership with Swan River Sailing, Australian Sailing and clubs; Royal Perth Yacht Club, Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club and South of Perth Yacht Club.
Andy Fethers from Swan River Sailing said there has never been a better opportunity to give it a go and get involved, with two different “Discover Sailing” activities planned for the whole weekend.
He said they will be running the Tackers sailing program for children under the age of 12, and for older kids and adults, there’s an opportunity to Discover Sailing on Perth Waters.
“Tackers is a program aimed at getting more primary school aged kids sailing at clubs across the country.
Everything about Tackers is centred on understanding how kids learn skills and have fun through sport,” Andy said.
“The boats used in the Tackers program are small, easy to handle and set up in a contained area. They are designed to be sailed by children under the age of 12.”
“Participants are given a lifejacket to use while on the water, and our instructors will teach them the basics of how to turn and steer. Within about 10 minutes, most kids have got the handle of managing these boats and are off sailing for themselves. Our instructors are right there of course to lend a hand,” Andy said.
Tackers sailing will be happening all weekend at the Perth International Boat Show within Elizabeth Quay, and is free to try out.
For older children and adults, the Discover Sailing program offers a chance to get out on a 36 foot yacht on the open water. No experience is necessary, guests can do as little or as much as they like and all safety precautions are taken.
“It doesn’t matter if you’ve never sailed before, this is a great opportunity to have a go and get a sailing experience!” Andy said.
“Participants will be taken in groups of five out from Elizabeth Quay and transferred onto the yachts. There will be two instructors aboard the yachts who are there to teach sailing skills and make sure participants enjoy their time on the water. Each run will last around 35 minutes.”
Andy said people could pre-register to have a go at sailing via: https://swanriversailing.typeform.com/to/A2U5WY or just come and register at the Show.
There’s really no easier way to try something new! The Discover Sailing program is delivered by Swan River Sailing, Australian Sailing and Clubs, Royal Perth Yacht Club, Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club and South of Perth Yacht Club; and proudly supported by Ronstan.
